Story 1 MY LOST DOLLAR

1.    Todd borrowed a dollar from the author the previous year on the 8th April when he was about to leave for Bermuda. He needed a dollar in change to pay for his taxi. Todd asked the speaker to give him a dollar and the author gave him.
2.    Todd’s note from Bermuda contained information regarding the weather of Bermuda. He wrote that the temperature of Bermuda was nearly 100. The figure misled the author for a moment.
3.    The speaker suggested Todd to take a taxi to the club because he wanted to remind Todd of the dollar which Todd had borrowed from him to pay his taxi fare.
4.    The speaker wants to forget that he had lent a dollar to Todd because he had tried his best to remind Todd about his dollar but Todd had genuinely forgotten about it and the author has no grudge about that. It would not make any difference in author’s behaviour toward him.
5.    The author does not want to remember what he might owe to others because he felt if Todd had forgotten about his dollar, it is quite possible that he had also borrowed a dollar from others and later forgot about it. He feels he would never be able to pay that and so better to forget about that.
06.       Why can’t the speaker forget?
The speaker says that his friend Todd had borrowed a dollar from him. Of course, it does not affect their friendship but he cannot forget it. It is because he often meets or talks to Todd and some reference or topic leads him to the thought of that dollar.
07. Why did the speaker go to receive Todd when he returned from Bermuda?
The speaker went to receive Todd when he returned from Bermuda simply because of their friendship. He clarifies that there was no intention of him to remind Todd of the dollar. He thought that Todd would feel good if someone is present to receive him.
08. What movement does the speaker want to start? Why?
The speaker wants to start “Back to Honesty” Movement so that other people can also be alert about paying their debts. Honesty, trust and integrity are essential qualities for a long-lasting and healthy relationship. Returning the borrowed money is one step in this direction.

SHORT NOTE:
The speaker had tried his best to remind Todd of the borrowed lost dollar. When Todd came back from Bermuda, the speaker went at the station to receive him. He dropped a hint to take a taxi to the club to remind Todd about the dollar but Todd preferred to walk. Later, he asked Todd about the currency of Bermuda and whether American dollar goes at par, emphasising on American dollar. Then one day, the speaker asked him about the expenses of his Bermuda trip but Todd said that that he did not keep any accounts. Thus the speaker tried his best to remind Todd but failed every time and finally decided to forget about that.
Short Note 02:- Leacock’s Humor as Shown in the Lesson
There are many incidences in this lesson which show Leacock’s sense of humor. When Todd sent a note from Bermuda, the speaker thought the cover contains a dollar but it didn’t. When Todd returned, the speaker talked about topics like currency of Bermuda, debt of Poland etc in case that would remind Todd of the borrowed dollar. He appeals people who lent him money to speak out one by one and demand for it. The speaker also suggests starting a Back to Honesty movement so that people like Todd would get inspired to return their borrowed money. Such things show the writer’s way of creating humor.
