3.A DAY’S WAIT

1.    In the beginning of the story Scahatz was looking ill. He was shivering, his face was white and he walked slowly as though it ached to move.
2.    The doctor prescribed three different medicines in three different coloured capsules with instructions for giving them. One was to bring down the fever, another a purgative and the third to overcome on acid condition.
3.    Schatz did not want his father to stay in the room with him because he thought it would bother him and in that case he did not want to bother his father. He had a misunderstanding that he was going to die and so he wanted to remain alone.
4.    There are two thermometers mentioned in the lesson. In the firstkind of thermometer, thirty-seven temperature is considered normal while in the second kind of thermometer, ninety-eight temperature is considered normal.
5.    Schatz’s father clarified his doubts regarding the temperature by giving him example of Miles and Kilometres and explained that the normal temperature is different in different kinds of thermometers.
6.    This is an apt and suitable title for the story because Schatz had a misunderstanding regarding the thermometer and thought that he was going to die. So he spent his whole day waiting for his death.
7.    What was the effect on Schatz after he understood his mistake?
Schatz got confused between two thermometers and he thought that he was going to die soon. However, after his father clarified his misunderstanding he felt relaxed. His moved his gaze which was fixed at a spot. He cried over little things. He started behaving as a normal child.

SHORT NOTE

1.    Schatz was looking ill. He was shivering, his face was white and he walked slowly as though it ached to move. He had fever and headache. The doctor came and took the temperature which was 102. The doctor prescribed three different medicines in three different coloured capsules with instructions for giving them. One was to bring down the fever, another a purgative and the third to overcome on acid condition. He said that it was a light epidemic of flu and there was nothing to worry if his fever did not go above 104 degrees.

2. The end of the story is funny and humorous. Schatz had a misunderstanding regarding the two thermometers. When he was studying in the school of France his friend told him that one can not live with temperature of 44 degrees. So when he heard the doctor telling his temperature was 102 he thought he was going to die. He thought that he was going to die. So he spent his whole day waiting for his death. But in the end of the story his father clarified his doubts regarding the temperature by giving him example of Miles and Kilometres and explained that the normal temperature is different in different kinds of thermometers. Then he realised his misunderstanding and got relaxed and normal.

3. Title of the story ‘A Day’s Wait’
The story is about the illness of an innocent boy named Schatz. He suffers from viral fever and he hears doctor diagnosing his illness. He gets confused between two types of thermometers and develops an illusion that he is having very high temperature. So he thinks that he is going to die in a day or two. He starts waiting for his death. The title of the story suggests that Schatz is waiting for his death which is to come very soon. It is only after his dad claries his confusion that he gets relaxed and behaves normally. So it is a day’s wait of death for poor Schatz’s mind.
